Solid Gold MG Classic Race Meeting

Post by Andy » Wed Sep 14, 2011 8:04 am

This is the 26th MG Classic Race Meeting and as usual will be a huge event. The club has received a posted invitation to this event so rather than scan the documents, below is the link and press release. Thursday is scrutineering and documentation in Petone only and Friday is scrutineering and documentation plus testing for entered cars only. So put Saturday and Sunday aside for an event worth entering or attending.

The Wellington MG Car Club will once again host the Formula 5000 single seaters at its 26th annual historic and classic race meeting at Manfeild Park on 12-13 November 2011.
The event is the longest continuous running classic race event in New Zealand.
As well as the thundering F5000 series single seaters, there will be an expected 300 other cars competing in 36 races over two days, including crowd pleasing Muscle Cars, classic sports and saloons from the 1950s, 60s & 70s, historic racing and sports cars, the popular Pre ’65 saloons and the exciting Castrol BMW E30 class.
The features of the weekend will be Sundays Formula 5000 Grand Prix and the Sybil Lupp Memorial Trophy race for British sports and saloon cars.
The event, which is organised by the Wellington region MG Car Club, gained increasing prominence through the 1980s and 1990s, and by 2004 was recognised as the then largest motor sport event in New Zealand, both in terms of entries and crowd support. Since then the event has continued to set benchmarks for New Zealand classic motor sport in terms of efficiency, consistency and innovation.
For example, a feature now being adopted by other classic events is the popular charity rides, whereby members of the public get to have a lap of the circuit in a classic car by making a $5 donation to the Cancer Society. Over the past ten years this and other fund raising by the MG club has raised over $100,000 for the Wellington and Manawatu divisions of the NZ Cancer Society.
Another innovation is the way that the classic races are divided into groups on the basis of relative speed, therefore ensuring that races are between closely matched vehicles.
The event continues the MG tradition of competition that began in 1928 when the founder of MG, Cecil Kimber, built the first production MG sports car at his Abingdon Morris Garage (MG) workshop.
