SEEDING ORDER is available in a clearer table than below here-->

http://targa.co.nz/data/media/documents ... 202011.pdf

Generally with some exceptions for multi car service crews the order runs slower classic to faster classic to faster modern to slower modern so there is no mid field time gap and spectators will see that the stage is still "hot". Good to see Richard Haakma out in amongst it, he was the finish post chief on our timing stages when we ran a start timing crew. Like us he is taking advantage of the very generous volunteers entry fee rates introduced by Peter and Vicky. So if you're thinking of having a skid in Targa go and have ago at helping for a few events its alotta fun with the right crew and you'll be rewarded with a special entry fee rate.

The weights are interesting. Whats with the 380Z, 2008?
All Nissans are racecars.

You mean Masao? Kelvin can tell you all the juicy details, but in short it's a Nismo special 350Z with a 3.8L VQ in it.

Yup another great event. Alan placed 1st in Category 4, if I am not mistaken a winner for the first time!

I will report on our mis adventure via the club magazine but sufficient to say that at different times of the event and particularly at the v beginning and the v end The Buildlink Zed has got it in it to take the class win. It went real well when it was running but suffered in order, broken cam pedestals, lower arm inner ball joint breakage and serious front rotor distortion.

Not one of these items was a design failure, everyone can be put down to poor prep. Back for next event, improvements needed in gear spacings, brakes and driver needs to upgrade his brave pill prescription.

Also once again the club members were instrumental in getting the car back in action and helping keep it in action. Anthony Baker had a new cam run for us on Wednesday and fitted and timed it in at his house with ex member Greg Gillespies very capable and knowledgeable assistance. Kelvin and Mike both lending accurate and helpful advice and offering parts.

Not forgetting Mike Cartmer getting awards for, I think, Best Presented Tour Car and a Strength in Adversity award. Mike put us right on this mate.

Also he gets an award from me for dissing Auto Electricians at the prize giving, or as I read it, the only way to get your car right is to do it yourself!

My award was "in the Spirit of Targa" and was awarded for the 3 days we put up with electrical problems and missing 2/3rds of the stages while we lined the pockets of various auto electricians. Day 1 was smoke from under the dash and burnt out wiring, day 2 was a blown voltage regulator probably as a result of day 1 and day 3 was a repeat of day 1. In the end I found the problem on day 5 and it was a wire that had got trapped behind the accelerator pedal and had exposed bare wire. That was intermittently shorting on the accelerator pedal and causing the problem. A quick application of insulation tape seems to have fixed things. I am frustrated in that I didn't spot it sooner and annoyed that none of the auto electricians bothered to check the other wires under the dash as it was fairly obvious. Sometimes it pays not to rely on the "experts" to do a proper job.

Apart from that we had a great time running as the first of the classics and giving the odd modern car the occassional hurry up. And the car ran like a charm apart from the wiring.

Another lesson for those of you who have fitted non-standard rotors. I have been putting up with a little bit of vibration from the front wheels since I have owned the car and it got worse just before we headed off to Targa. The only thing I could see that we had changed was the fitting of new wheel bearings. Tried 3 different pairs of balanced wheels on the front to no avail. In the end we found that one of the caliper bolts was not tight enough (not loose just needed another 1/4 turn) and at the same time noticed that when the rotors were drilled to suit my hubs that it must have been about 1mm to 2mm off centre - picked up by noticing that the pad contact area on the rotor was not consistent all round the rotor. So, some new rotors will be on the list shortly and they will be machined by someone who has the right gear to do it properly. And the 1/4 turn of the bolt made enough of a difference to about halve the vibration issue.

And there is a desperate need for some more older classic cars on the Tour - this year there were only 5 of us and 3 of them were travelling at a pace that any standard Z could keep up with. I did enjoy both following and being followed by Larry in his 350Z (and beating him at the Springhill Farm airstrip "drags"). The neat thing about the Tour is that you can drive at your own pace - I think you have about 80% of the fun at 30% of the cost of the full Targa.

Interestingly enough, 3 of the navigators of other cars on the Tour owned 240Zs!!!
