Hi

Post by projects » Tue Jun 07, 2011 9:45 am

Hi all

Well im currently not a Z owner, but i am going to run a Z box behind my RB26 Holset powered S13. :? Yes it is a bit of a mashed up nissan from all models. and will be a purpose built track car. with mostly so drift competitions in mind, but am wanting to do some normal track racing to see how hard i can push the set up with some minor tweaks with suspension set ups and tyres.

Guess my main reason to join was on gaining some information and access to some Z33 parts for the 6 speed to go behind my 26. And also to be in the loop on some track events that would allow a S-chassis.

But i also wanted to look at a RB26 powered 260z for a weekender. but that will be looked at after this track car is built.

Cheers Guys

cheers

yeah im hoping the close ratio on the Z box with 6 gears will keep the motor up in the rev range. was a little worried about the 26 bogging down with the HX40.
Just beginning the adaptor plate at the moment. tried posting apicture but it'll have to wait till i get my post count up a few more.

Is that your car in your avatar? very nice sexy car!

oh yes i see the photo in your gallery you shopped.

amazing what a little lower, a front lip and some black paint can do to a vehicle.

And new wheels, and a rear wing, and shaved handles, and tints, and new grill...

I really had a lot of time on my hands when I did that one :P

Welcome to the forum. If it's a Z33 box you're after, you could find that hard to get hold of. They seem to be one of the first bits stripped out if there's wrecked 350 at Pick a Part or the like. Otherwise you could try www.my350z.com. That's the largest online 350 community globally.

oh wow a lot of tiny little things i over looked quickly in the photos. you did have some spare time doing all of that.

Thanks for the welcome.
I've already got my box sorted. but its the drive shaft yoke im really only wanting now. carbon fibre things are going to prove hard to come buy so might have to import one from japan. $300 i would like to spend else where.... if i can manage to trim the shaft back and somehow make it work then that'd be good. but highly unlikeyl i guess.

Have you asked somebody that makes driveshafts whether they have one or not? The guy that made my mates driveshaft in his VQ powered S13 had one for a VG30DETT gearbox sitting on his shelf, bit different I know but might be an option.

How much power is your RB putting out? Do you think the 6 speed will handle it okay?

yeah thats my next approach, i hear the 5speed auto trans use the same output shaft just the dust boot is on the drive shaft. that was what has been said in the US. and hopefully a test fit should tell me whether or not they are. But a few wreckers said they have different spline counts, but its only hear say and haven't counted or tried. so be interesting to see.

The 6 speed has a very large gear set in them, i think larger than the 25 and gtr boxes. and huge over the SR20 and RB20 boxes. the only supposable down fall are the syncro's in them. but thats the same with all gearboxes. guess with the closer ratios you'l just change through the gears more often than a 5 speed.

I only intend on a comfortable 350-380kw so should handle it alright. nothing to extreme for the mean time. at the moment its sitting on the floor of my garage with the box strapped to it waiting to fab a adaptor plate.
i'll post a couple pictures once i get over my 5 post count.

thanks for all the ideas and help guys. i tried a couple other forums but they were silvia and skyline ones.... knew nothing about a Z box.

here's a couple images that have me motivated in my gearbox conversion.

then this is basically my build so far. only beginning and wheres are only for rolling body, will run wider wheels with lower offset.
i try and do as much work myself as possible, major fab work like roll cage and manifold i'll leave for the pro's.

Image
had to do some fiberglassing and bogging cause the kit was damaged on the way from japan. not easy when its freezing cold.

this is the beginning of the gearbox conversion

here's just a couple pictures from my build so far. yes i know its not a Z car, im sorry :(

Looks good man, I just painted my engine bay black too, what a pain that was!

The place that made my mates driveshaft was:

Driveshaft Specialists NZ
32 Andromeda Crescent
East Tamaki
(09) 273 1532

He was a pretty good dude, reasonable on the price but my mate didn't shop around. He might be worth a call?

Looking at the size of those gears I wonder why the guy that originally had my mates motor did this to fit a VG30DETT box to the VQ30:

I think it was done before the 350 gearboxes got so cheap, you see them on Trademe these days for $300 - 400 less than RB25DET boxes.

Will give them a call when i get a chance, i see you can buy just a yoke in from the US so might look into that as well. but still $180 just for the yoke.
yeah they're reasonably sized gears. i think a lot of people just presume that the 6 speed boxes are crap like the SR S15 ones were. a lot of hear say i think. but a fair bit of fab work will be needed to make this work with the starter hitting the bell housing and needing to be cut up.

Yeah i'm getting my box for $600, steel is free to make the adapter. then only real cost is going to be the drive shaft and short shifter on top. will still work out cheaper than a 25det or any other box, and give me a closer ratio box to keep my turbo up in the rev range. the actual final over drive gear in 6th is less than a SR box in 6th.

The engine bay is a rough job to be honest. it was starting to rust a little after i welded the seams, so i took the rust off and the just a sanding disc on the grinder scuffed it up and lay some gloss black industrial paint on it. nothing to flash as its a track car and it also has to be ground and welded back over for front tower plates and also firewall holes blocked off. and most of the front is being cut out for custom ducting and light and radiator supports. engine bay mounted intercooler and piping. for less lag as possible.

This looks interesting. Keep us informed. And to think my biggest problem was loose bonnet hinges.

thanks, yes has been interesting piecing many of nissans together to build this, i think the Z's were nearly the only model car i was missing from this crazy build.
there's skyline R32, R33, cefiro A31, laurel C33, silvia S13, s14, s15 Now hopefully a 350Z gearbox.

yeah i think the bonnet hinges are the least of my worries.
