N42 vs N54

Can anyone tell me the difference between a n42 cyl head and a n54? hope I got the numbers right.

You did get the numbers wrong. I have never heard of a N54 head. F54 Block yes N54 anything no. There are N42 head and there are N42 blocks there is also N42 intake manifolds but only F54 blocks.

Here in NZ most of the L28 heads you will see are N42's there are a few P90 heads around but they are hard to find. I have not seen a P79 head here in NZ yet.

thanks for clearing that up for me, I am in the early stages of looking at extacting some more hp out of my zx and am trying to get my head around some of the datsun/nissan peculiarities, thanks again

p90 was also used on the American/euro L28et.

there is a p90 on trademe, but im watching that ;)

the most common is a N42 head. You can still get large amounts of power with any l28 factory combo. Mostly n42/n42 block and heads. 650hp atw has been reached in the states on the non turbo block and head (internals factory)

That is fine in you want a Turbo but what if he wants NA then you will be limited to 250hp at the wheels (more can be had with boring and stroke option but the max is around 100HP ATW per 1000cc as a rule of thrumb) and that would cost you a large chuck of change to get that far in NA.
