I need a rebuilt power steering rack for a z32 - where from?

Post by positive ape » Wed Apr 25, 2012 10:10 am

Hi all,

I'm a new member with a Z32, living in Masterton.

It has leaking steering rack so I'm looking for a rebuilt or exchange unit. Where could I get one of these?

It has movement in the left rear wheel bearing. What's the best way to fix this? Get the bearing replaced or get a secondhand hub?

It has some "stern" brand, 17 inch, 5 spoke alloys on it. Possibly a dealer fitment in Japan as I've seen similar wheels on a few z32s. I'd like to replace them with original alloys if anyone is interested in a swap?

Thanks a lot

A built PS rack will require new OEM components so you'll need to refer to Nissan for those if considering a local mechanic to build/fit?
It's not an easy/cheap task to remove the full steering rack so I wouldnt compromise with a used/unknown rack.

Otherwise if its just the case of replacing a hose then importing such from USA may be the better idea. I regulary do bulk buys for club mates / friends and may be able to discount/offer piggyback shipping for you. Checkout: conceptzperformance.com

Alternativly Dave a club member here & Z specialist at Z parts Auto may have what you need on hand - though he is located in Manukau Auckland. (09) 276 7376

Wheel bearings arn't cheap and I recommend Genuine Nissan for those. (Other-generic types seem to have fitment and durability issues.)
Im not prone to sticking second hand stuff on my Zeds - but a used bearing in my opinion is still false economy.

Original alloys came in various widths. (7.5" types I would deem to narrow for TwinTurbo varients/found on NAs) You should be able to find a good set on trademe eventually if not through the club sites.
Good luck :)

Thanks Zilver.

I called Dave about the steering rack and he said he would check it out and just do what needs to be done. Meaning it could be under $300.

The only other quote I got was from Hutt Automatics and they wanted $400-$440 + GST

I'll probably get a Nissan dealer to do the wheel bearing

Current mags are pretty wide. Rear tyres are 255x35 I think and fronts are 235x40. Overkill since it is an NA, and I rather have cheaper tyres and a more comfortable ride.

I've got some oem wheels here.
The tires fitted are 225 x 50 x 16 Bridgestones of some kind and are pretty much done.
I wouldn't bother trying to get a warrant with them.
The wheels are two left and two right with centre caps. I think they would clean up pretty much good as new, but I haven't tried.
I don't use them on the road, just fit them to whatever z32 I have in storage at the time.

I might be interested in a swap if you have no luck closer to home.
Post a picture or a link to what yours are and i'll take a look. Do you know the offset?

Fair quotes :)
Current mags are pretty wide
Heh overkill you reckon? I've 18" 245 up front and 265 rear on my NA :P
Well light weight wheels help greatly, and stock profile tyres with the comfort and economy factor.

Yeah, on the wheel bearing I'd agree. I lost one last year and it cost about $400 from memory. Mind you, I also got them to clean and repack the second one as well, just to be safe. From first grumble to knackered was only maybe 250ks. It got me home. Just.
