Advice on the best adhesive for Rubber Window Seals

Post by mike260z » Tue Mar 11, 2014 11:36 pm

Hi All

Just about to replace my hatch rubbers and rear light seals and was wondering what the best stuff to stick them on with is? Also does anyone know of an easy way to remove all of the sticky muck left behind on my windscreen from the old rego holder?

Thanks Heaps

Mike

Just use some turps for the sticker. I got some glue for mine, worked fine. I will see if I can dig the tube out think I still have it. Came with my rubber kit.

Doesn't nail polish remover work as well for the sticky bits?

Also keen to find out what adhesive to use going to replace all my rubber and seals soon

Good idea on the nail polish remover , I already have turps so I will try that first.

Make sure the nail polish remover doesn't get on any paint.

I've been told to get some proper windshield glue/goop (get this from glass replacers/repairers) when doing my windscreen and hatch, for all other seals I'll be using some sikaflex ;)

Don't use heaps though, especially if you want to take them off at a later stage :P

Acetone also works well, cheaper form of nail polish remover

Rainex Black, and bonus is you can do the whole inside of the screen to keep the glass clear and improves the clarity of the glass the same as the Yellow does for the exterior glass. Black removes any rego sticker or any other gunk for that matter. Really important to follow the instructions.

Sikaflex 291 in small quantities works well, if you wish to remove the rubbers in one peice ever dont use too much, i.e. Use small dabs at intervals. If you're after permanent, never fall off rubber connection, Sikaflex 291 is better and easier to use than the messy contact adhesives that are traditional on older vehicles.

I used Ados F2 contact in the past, and it was a P.I.T.A.

Had a look for mine but can't find it. One of the good things is that it was black.

Thanks anyway for looking , I am going to probably go for the Sikaflex as it can be purchased from Bunnings etc. The Z store where I got the seals recommends an adhesive called Permatex - it appears to be a black silicone sealant.
