The stubs for the Subaru STI diff are available through Futo Fab in the States, there is a link under suppliers on our website. No need for Cv's the u joint axles have proven themselves over time. I had to get another set of axles so I could rob the universal as my half shafts plugged straight into the diff. But I understand not all of them came like that. You will need the special bolts for the axle to bolt onto the half shafts. They are the same as the wheel end but are special bolts, you can't use a standard bolt in it. The shank is a little bigger than the thread. The head is also small and butts up against a ridge in the stub so you can do it up.
All the best with your work.

Thanks bernie,
i'll keep an eye out for a diff, then stick with the U joints + Futo fab Stub shafts.

In other news, the ITB conversion process has officially started, Rob from whitley tune has started on my kit,
Although it will be a few months away, but happy to wait.
Heres a taste:

Also, i'm about to pull the trigger on a 71C RB20det box.
But before I do, could anyone comment on the difference it makes over the 71B box in terms of drivability? shift feel? etc
Basically just want to know from someone with experience if they think it was worth it?

Biggest change I noted when I installed the RB20DET gearbox was the shorter gear lever throw, and it was a bit smoother too. I did have some issues getting the correct gear lever though as otherwise it was hitting on the centre console surround when trying to select 1,3 or 5.

Thanks, what did you end up doing about the shifter? did you bend one or is there a factory or aftermarket one that works?

Ditto to the above.Mine also has a short shifter kit in it so accentuates the shorter throw..
The other thing is 5th is significantly longer- .759 compared with .864.
Which throttle body kit are you using ?

I stuck with the lever that came with the box after reading about people heating and bending them to shape
and then having them snap.
Had a little trimmed out of the front of the hole in the console. Was done really well, pretty much unnoticeable.
Only a tiny bit is required.

I had several levers so chose the one that gave the biggest backwards angle when fitted, and I need to make sure the rubber boot around the gearlever is positioned so it doesn't touch the console or else it jumps out of gear. I have a short shifter kit too but haven't fitted that yet. Can't say I noticed a difference to 5th gear ratio and I bought my gearbox all ready to go so just ran with what it had. Car runs at about 2800rpm in 5th for 100km/h.

Re the speed/revs, I'm running a 3.9 diff and 2500rpm = 100kph.with tyres 225x50x16..
When the car was stock it had the .864 5th gear with 3.54 diff and also 2500rpm = 100kph, so for me
the longer 5th in the 71C box pretty much exactly offsets the lower diff ratio in terms of 5th gear cruising .

What size are the ITB's?
I have seen them on FB pages, they look cool.

Thanks for the replies RE shifter, I had a chat to the guys at cube speed in oz about one, but they aren't keen to help with a custom lever that works better.
The box I'm getting doesn't come with a shifter, so i'll have to sort something out there.

Throttle body kit is coming from NZ! Whitley Tune down near Christchurch. He's on Facebook and instagram, and has a website.
I've been talking to Rob whitley about it for a while, should be a really cool kit, Custom tailored, no more expensive than a Jenvey kit or similar and there are so many things better about it (in my opinion).
Size will be 47 or 48mm, tuned to the second harmonic for the cam i'll be running.
Rob has a Z as well, and some might of seen "built on purposed" on youtube is running one of his kits.

Pretty excited about this part of the project, then it'll be onto body work next, because my car is looking very rough

Nice work, with that sort of work you will certainly have a well-sorted car, Thanks for posting.

Hi Guys,

When I did the manual swap I replaced the rear main seal as I thought it was leaking and it was a good time to do it,

I've still got a leak coming from the rear of the engine.
I'm now 99% sure its coming from the Aluminium(?) plug in the rear of the block. While the box is out again this week I need to fix it.
The plug seems to be damaged, not sure how this would have happened.

Any guidance on how to remove this and what to replace it with?
Also just curious what the purpose of it is?

thanks,
Connor

Hi Guys,

Been a minute since I made a video, but here's the latest:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qfceYUPV6NU&t=724s

Got the 71C box conversion all buttoned up after a few set backs. Really happy with the end result.
Still got a long way to go with the car, but heading in the right direction.

Cheers,
Connor

Yeah its a good swap to do, apart from a small weight penalty it all good.
I love mine.
