Datsun 280ZX IMSA GTU race car build...
Hi Grant
Apologies re dash. I looked at the shape and automatically assumed Motec ! Good advice from Reg. Keep the big red light and gauge for oil pressure. The Aim dash is a good dash board but as you are no doubt aware it is exactly that. Gregs Z (later converted to Motec ) and a number of cars i have been involved with have run Aim dash boards. The Aim dash whilst having inbuilt alarm programming only illuminates one of the six LEDS down the sides in the event of a problem ( say low oil pressure). If memory serves correctly this can be displayed on the bottom data line where the best lap function in your pic is. This however relies on the driver remembering what each alarm function LED is or having to scoll to the correct menu to display it on the bottom line and reading it. Not ideal whilst trying to drive.
The Aim dash also has no outputs allowing aux lights, relays or ignition cutouts to be driven in the case of a problem.
Hence the big red light is still the most bullet prove system at this level. If you are going to run fuel injection some sort of engine cut may be able to be incorporated in the event of low oil pressure or other problems.
If you have any technical questions regarding the Aim dash or auxilary components just call. Im by no means an expert but Greg knows alot about it (he is also a Motec trained data logging/dash geek). My good friend David Taylor at Motorsport Services in Whangaparaoa is also an Aim Dealer/Importer.
Cheers
Anthony

Hi Antony,
The ECU is a Motec m800 and I was going to get the Motec SDL dash but chose the Aim unit based on price, as budget was getting hammered, not that there really is a budget, but now have a family & house...
The car is running fuel injection, 50mm throttle bodies from speed technology Australia...
I will check with Reg to see if we can do what you mention by incorporating a engine cutout with a low oil pressure warning, another good idea.
This dash was bought from Motorsport Services through Cook-Motor-Racing.
Cheers Grant

Finally an update...
Not to much done since last time but at least its moving forward now, and now I am back in NZ I can finally get my hands dirty on the weekend!
My older son (Ethan) by the zed, with new FRP wing sitting not quite in the correct place... but nearly.
The FRP wing closer up, mould taken directly from my factory ZXR wing... probably not as light as I hoped it to be, but at least I can paint it to the car colour...
(If any one wants one let me know, as I have a mould...)
New Carbon dash, with gauges installed... better than the wooden mock up, but still more bits to add to it yet before I can say its finished.
Rear fuel cell area with new alloy divider... will have perspex window fitted to complete the isolation of the fuel compartment.
Engine looking the same (mock up engine), but dusty... you can just make out the new SS header flange with stubs welded on... need to make the headers now, all bits in hand...
Fire extinguisher ready for final plumbing, my job this weekend!
All for now but hope to have more regular updates and photos.
Cheers Grant

I'd be interested to see if the rear wing would fit a Z31
AKA ZFETSH
Now armed with a Z32 2+0 NA

I will measure the base for you and let you know...Heretic wrote:I'd be interested to see if the rear wing would fit a Z31
Curently the mould of the wing was taken on a flat surface, so it needs to get modified to suit the angle of the 280 coupe hatch...
Not sure how much camber is in the Z31 hatch?

Car is finally at the doctors!
The replacement roof has been prepped for fitment, and body is stripped for blasting.
I took home the suspension, including subframe/arms/cross member etc which is all now in bits being rebuilt.
Will post pictures shortly.
Next step for body is another blasting next week then straight into a 2pak primer (after the dust has been cleaned), and then a bit of steel work and panelbeating required, followed by the plastic parts...
Been discussing suspension works on this thread...

Found some new adjustable tension rods for the car the other day from USA...
These look a bit better than the MSA ones I was planning to use which are more for road car use...
Also the CMR inlet manifold has come out nice from a bead blast.
Will look at putting a high temp coating on it next week just to help protect it a bit...

Hi Bernie, yeh they do both the 240z and 280zx, the 280zx has them in tension, compared to the 240z's ones in compression.
(possibly the picture is a generic one? see new pic below...)
They also do bump steer spacers, if i had known would not have made my own!
Ironically the same part was $10 more on ebay, but the freight was cheaper on ebay, so I used Ebay, not their www...
