100 Octane

Post by netrover » Wed Dec 19, 2018 9:36 pm

An NPD station opened just down the road from work and I see that they sell 100 octane.

Is there any benefit in upgrading from BP Ultimate I use at the moment?

Only you can answer that, it will be a price based thing, you probably wont notice a big difference in performance 98 to 100, all else being equal. My understanding is that generally in modern road cars with Lambda sensors etc that going up in octane won't harm your engine and may give it some better characteristics. The same does not apply in reverse, do not go down in octane below what the engine is designed for!

Probably not much help but your simple question unfortunately does not have a simple answer, there are too many variables in fuel sourced from different suppliers, particularly fuel direct from overseas refineries.

Thanks Andy

I’ll probably stick with BP Ultimate 98 as a new BP service station has opened up 100 metres from work saving me driving a few km out of my way to BP Hoon Hay. Also have a BP fuel card so get a discount.

350z & 370z are designed to use 98 octane. Anything less and you risk detonation and boom of the engine.

Sorry Bronze that is not correct we have had our 350 for 7 years now and have always run it on 95 from Z and have never had any issues.

Bronzee old age must be setting in, you said this a mere 10 years ago :)
Use unleaded premium gas with octane of at least 95 (RON) octane.

If premium gas not available, 91 maybe temporarily used, but only under following precautions:
* Only partially filled with 91 & fill up with full grade (ie 98 ) as soon as possible.
* Avoid full throttle driving & abrupt applications of the go faster pedal.

For maximum vehicle performance, use of premium gas is recommended.
