2004 350Z fuel guage issue

Post by mudgripz » Mon May 15, 2017 9:53 pm

Just noticed a problem - intermittent false fuel readings. I put say $50 (25 litres) gas into car but dash fuel guage will read near empty, and the top mounted cluster read out also shows just a few ks left to go before empty.

It tends to go away after one or two start/stops - no doubt a reboot. Just wondering what it could be - how to fix. Faulty sensor at fuel tank, faulty dash guage, or something electronic?

Appreciate some advice - thanks

Pretty common issue.

Have a look at Zmanalex's (Alex) post here. He's a tech and a good one, so knows what he's talking about.

Cool thanks for that - suspected it would be sender but don't know 350Z setup.

Just finished 3000ks roadtrip round parts of south and north islands - my lady and I in the 350Z. Its an amazing cruiser that effortlessly chews up the miles, and has stonking acceleration when you need to pass something. Great fun. What also really impressed me was fuel consumption. Over the 3000ks it averaged exactly 30mpg or about 9.4L per 100ks, or 10.6ks per litre. Best result was one section (no town running) at 31.6mpg or 8.9L per 100ks. Amazing economy from a big performance six.

Impressed with this car..

They're great for open road driving, I've usually had over double economy (if that's the right word for a Z, lol ) on open road. Sometimes up around 7-800kms from a tank.

True, had a lot of fun driving around the east/west coast of Northland.
On motorways, at ~110km/h I've seen 11.2Km/L and the 350Z is just loping along (6speed manual).
Given the petrol tank is 80L and one cruises at 10-11km/L you'd be getting around 800/880km per tank.
Sadly, I'm mostly town bound and 7.5-8.5km/L is more my lot with around 600km per tank.
I've read and I don't know how true it is, but it's mooted there is a 'bigger' reserve than what is indicated on the fuel gauge, which may be the reason the tank only takes ~65L when the fuel gauge is saying you're almost empty.

Everybody knows this(except me), but I was surprised to read years back that the little arrow on the fuel gauge always points to the side your filler cap is on (In all cars I think)

Fuel guage read/sender issue getting worse after 12 months. Anyone know of a Z club or other mechanic in or near Christchurch who could do this job?

I have mine serviced at Cochram Nissan. Just noticed fuel gauge issues myself. Shows close to empty after a fill up but comes right after a while. Resetting the trip meter at each refill just to be sure!
