Greasing steering rack

Post by stevenewenham » Mon Apr 19, 2021 10:57 am

I had some difficulty with this.
Late model 260.Followed the Haynes manual instructions- peel back the dust boot, unscrew the plug in the rack, replace with grease nipple,
pump in grease until it emerges between the rack and the housing. The grease was squeezing out , either between the base of the nipple and the rack,
on one side, or between the gun nozzle and the nipple on the other..It just did not want to go into the rack.
I checked that the nipple wasn't blocked, that the sprung ball was moving, then changed to a nipple with no sprung ball.
Same result. The weird thing is I have done this job at least twice before since I have owned the car with no dramas.
In the end I extended the rack out to full lock and smeared a pile of grease over the teeth and the rest of the rack.
Any ideas on why the grease nipple approach wouldn't work ?
