What Early S30z's exist or existed in NZ? Early Girl Bingo..

Post by gav240z » Mon Dec 28, 2015 2:44 am

Hi there,
I thought I already had an account over the pond, but guess I didn't. So I signed up recently, you may recognise my username from the Auszcar forums? I know we have a few Kiwi's on the board over there.

Anyway the reason for this post is related to a thread I started a while back on Auszcar - called Early Girl Bingo.

*You'll need to Google it - forum restrictions on first few posts including URLs

I know in NZ you would have received some HS30 prefixed cars. So I'm wondering if anyone know's of or knew of any early HS30 prefix cars in NZ or that were previously in New Zealand?

At this stage I'm really interested in learning about cars under HS30 00500 but also interested in cars up to HS30 01000 (about 1971).

Just trying to get an idea of what's left and in what shape. As I'm sure you'll agree the thread above is quite insightful and gives a good view of what's left.

Thanks for any info you can share to be included.

Cheers,
Gavin

Hi Merlin,
Thanks for the reply? Got any photos of that car? What was it's original colour and was it manual (I assume it was?). That is a high number HS30 in the 1000 range. Nissan made a jump at some point to the 10,000 range to indicate a change over.

In 1971 Nissan introduced the Fairlady 240Z-L and the Fairlady 240ZG both of which shared the same HS30 prefix.

I can't link to it yet, but there is a Fairlady 240Z-L which claims production was 10/71 but it is a 1972 model and it has the chassis number: HS30-10052

It's the same Fairlady 240Z-L on Petrolicious videos (Blue car RHD).

However notice how the chassis moved up to the 10,000 range? So I wonder what the highest number is before that switch. Since your car is September 1971, it seems like it might be 1 of the highest numbers before that change over.

Does it still have the hand throttle? I assume it does, as far as I'm aware 1970 and 71 AU models retained that all the way until the change over in 1972.

Sorry about that. It is No HS30-001694. It does not have the "cruise control feature" so it must have just missed out. It is a matching numbers car and was met brown with the butterscotch colour interior. It was totally stripped down to the bare shell and had no expense spared, every last nut and bolt resto done over 3.5 years. It would have been cheaper to buy a Porsche/Ferrari. It had a CB radio installed in it in Oz as that seemed to be a trend in the 70s and it had huge sun visors that looked like blocks of wood. It looks nothing like it did when I got it so it is now a very different car. I have not done any mods that can't be taken back to original except for the paint colour. Yep it is manual 5spd

There is an S30 register on here if you search, it's a spreadsheet with some chassis numbers present

Hey Gav,

Lowest on the spreadsheet is Hs30 00352. then jumps up to 01233. If you go to the general technical tab the s30 register is there not many chassis numbers though.

@ merlin - Does HS30-001694 have an early or later style console?

@ Andy - thanks I'll take a look.

@ Karljsw - thanks, but I'm a little disappointed I haven't found a couple of earlier VIN's hiding.

Just looking at that spreadsheet it seems not everyone enters the chassis number into the sheet, which is a shame...

Does anyone have photos of HS30 00352?

I'm wondering if early NZ delivered 240z's had the same fender mirrors as our market?

*Edit still can't post images till I hit magical post No.5.

@Merlin - HS30 01428 - still has the early style console and is a 1971 model.

HS30-001694 has got to be 1 of the last 1971 model cars, how have you confirmed it's a September 1971 model? Does it have an Australian compliance plate still attached to it? Generally Australian cars didn't state year of manufacture like US made cars. Rather we have to rely on compliance dates which are usually ~3-4 months after the fact.

Another way to obtain a rough date of build is looking at Engine no. and date stamps on various components fitted to the car.

Just wondering if you've done any of that to verify your build date?

I’ve got a 1970 from Oz (number 850 or so). I’m very curious about the specs of these early cars.
Mine has had a mysterious life before me and so I thought lots of the USA car info I found applied to mine. Turns out it doesn’t.

Mine has the hand throttle, but not the hatch vents or 240z pillar badges. I also had a 5 speed box with the early type of gear lever, with matching 5 speed gear knob. I thought I was a transplant due to the USA spec info I could scratch up. Maybe not...

Other interesting points are the cloth seats and Perspex corner windows.

These seem fairly unique points but they were there from way back...

This is interesting. My 71 said to be first registered in nz in 1971 Dec #1234 is what it says on my car report, has the two throttles in the middle ( choke an throttle ) but does not have the early 240z badge on the rear quarter panel and had a 5spd manual in it.

So I am unsure of what to make of the vehicle. . .
