Just bought this 280ZX

Post by LD » Sun Feb 28, 2021 2:06 pm

Hello guys again,

I have been around this forum since 2014 when I bought my 350Z. I was using that 350z for daily driven for about 4.5 years, and also used it as a weekend track car. Had a lots of fun with it. Then I sold it at the end of 2018 due to having a baby due soon at that time.

Long story short, I feel like I need a Z, was looking for an S30 actually no one sell it and I cannot afford it, so ended up bought this S130 280ZX yesterday. This sample is pretty clean and tidy, and got the ZClub NZ logo on its windscreen, so it might belongs to an ex-owner here.

So first thing as usual is to do all the maintenance, hence I got few questions:
1. Best fuel? (Assuming 98)
2. Best oil? Engine is 166kms.
3. Best wheel and tires size? I am thinking 15x7 ET0 wrapping with 205/50/15. Any thought? I will use it for daily for now, but might bring it to the track at some point this year once verified everything on the car is healthy.
4. Any specific maintenance required for the S130 chassis? I know the most concern on this car is rust, but so far I don't see any rust on the car, so assuming it should be good.

Last but not least, would love to say hi the the previous owner. :)

Thanks.

Welcome back to Z ownership LD.
The body does look tidy from the shots posted.Nice to avoid that major expense.
Interesting to see somebody going back in time in Z marques.
Once you've had one you will always come back !
Being an S30 owner, I cant help you much with the tech questions.

Yeah I was looking for a while to get a rust free sample since S30/S130 is known for lots of rust in body and I don't wanna spend too much time and money sorting out rust. More keen to enjoy driving it :)

Welcome back. I agree the Z bug bites hard. I think you have bought at the right time, as the 280ZX prices are on the rise.

Have you considered coming to track day? We are still looking to fill more spots.
Sorry I can't answer your questions, I have a 260 and I usually put 95 in it, but it can run on 98. I have been putting a good zinc-rich oil in it as the motor was rebuilt 10,000 km ago but now just go by the book.
As far as wheels and tyres go that is all bit of a personal choice. I have 15-inch rims on my car, but up to you if you like the look of narrow tyres then go up a size. I have always bought at the upper end of the midrange tyres. Especially if you intend to use as daily. If you are keen on tracking then you could buy into the upper end but then you will be spending $300 plus per tyre.

Hey, thanks for posting and all the best with your Z ownership.

Hi man,

Thanks for your info. I actually always keen for track days, and did lots of track days on my 350z when I had it. However, I don't think the 280zx is ready for track days yet, hence I might pass it this year. Hopefully get sort it out and get it track ready in a year time. :)
