Post by mike260z » Fri Jan 14, 2011 9:45 am

Greetings

So the engine i had lined up to buy ( not through the club ) may no longer be for sale so i am looking for an L28 as the base for my L30 build. Any help would be great cheers.

If you have trouble finding a L28 - just sleeve a L26 ;)

Good idea 8) - i did however get told that my L26 has the wrong head , as in not the right one for tuning. I think it came out of a 260C or something not a Zed.

Yes it is a shame you can't get new heads still like others that kiwi cylinder head makes and export. Now if you were going to the trouble of getting a place like that to cast up a new head - I think it would be better to get them to make a replica of the FIA cross flow head - as that was FIA approved now that would have some value...but that is off topic....

If your head was off a 260c it might be a E30 or E88. The E88 is sim to the N42 (N42 is the L28 head, as in the P90) the issues with the E88 heads is

1. The age - most have gone though a number of heat cycles = soft
2. The have small valves = more work (but then for performance even an N42 or P90 will be worked in this area too)

Now as you are going L30 anyway you want a head to breath to match that bottom end and if you want good strong power get ready to drop some good coin on the head/cam/valves and labour cost to do it right - between $2.5 - 3K I would say (but that does depend on the goals of the car - you can do a $1.5 - 2K and make a good strong head for a very very strong road car ;)

Do you want the car to run on pump gas? That will limit your CR to around 10.5:1 tops and around 210-230hp at the wheels if every thing is done correctly and matches ie headers, carbs/EFI etc (A worked race engine should yield a lot more ;))

Try calling Blair engine suppliers (google) they sometimes have L28 engines not cheap but it will be a good strong L28 that has been stored inside a warehouse.

Thanks for all the helpful info mate. I think from what Anthony said my head is an E88 and not worth working on. The goal i have for the build is an engine that makes around 200 - 230hp at the wheels and runs on pump gas. That should be plenty to light a fire under the 260Z. I dont want huge power and breakages. The main reason i am building it as my car came with triple 44mm Mikunis and a Nismo exhaust and headers so i am building an engine to fit my accessories. I dont want to part with the carbs and they are wasted on the current engine. I want to keep the L26 in case there are issues with the other engine and so i can keep driving the car until just before i drop the new engine in.

I have a L28 N42 block minus manifolds which ran ok but was low on power so perfect for rebuild. $400, drive down to Tauranga and pick it up. Planing to remove it from car veryu shortly, probably this weekend. Have to check which head it has.
